What is Spray Foam?
Spray Foam insulation comes in two separate containers and is referred to as "A"side and "B" side containers. The A-side contains polyurethane made from methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and the B-side polymeric methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (pMDI) is a mixture of polyol resins, fire-retardants, surfactants and catalysts. These two components are blended during the application process. When these two chemicals are mixed, an expansion starts to form when exposed to heat, instantly expanding to form insulation. Once mixed the curing process begins and spray foam insulation is born. Other chemicals present in spray foam insulation are organic compounds derived from petroleum extracts. Spray foam is environmentally safe and class one fire-rated and does not retain water. |
What are the benefits of spray foam?
Spray Foam insulation has many benefits, it can be used for retrofitting jobs or for new construction jobs.
Spray foam comes in two variations, closed cell and open cell. Closed cell is the more expensive of the two and has super hero like qualities.
Closed-cell Insulation is very tough and dense, it is the most effective insulation in existence. Spray foam prevents air leakage, no air can get through due to its density, which also makes it a great moisture and vapour barrier. Closed-cell spray foam insulation has proven to have superior performance and durability over all other types of insulation. Not only is spray foam super tough and durable but it also makes your dollars go a long way as it tends to be the most cost-effective option in the long run because it lasts a very long time and works hard to reduce unwanted temperature fluctuations. Spray foam is constantly working around the clock to save you money by keeping the heat or cool air where it belongs inside your home which translates into more money in your pocket.
After closed cell spray foam has been applied to a surface, it instantly expands 30-50 times its original volume once dry. It weighs approximately 2 pounds per cubic foot. Hardened closed-cell foam has a tensile strength of 28 psi. A house or building's structure gains strength and durability through the use of closed-cell spray foam. In the event of a hurricane or severe storm, the walls and roof of a building would be protected with the added reinforcement. As a result, the structure would be less likely to be damaged by strong winds and other natural forces. The R-value of closed-cell spray foam is 6.1 per inch of thickness.
In contrast to closed-cell spray foam, open-cell spray foam is soft and flexible and weighs about 1/2 lb per cubic foot when applied to a surface. It expands 140 times its original vol. The open-cell insulation traps air relatively well, but does not provide moisture and vapour protection. The tensile strength of open-cell spray foam is 4.0 psi.
Spray foam is very versatile, and it combines all the benefits of other insulation types. The benefits of spray foam are very appealing to architects, home builders, and homeowners alike.
Spray foam insulation is more expensive than all the other types of insulation on the market, but your investment will yield returns in many other ways. SPFI (Spray insulation) adds value to a home or business if it was ever to be sold. Not only is it a great selling point but the added value will be passed down to the new owner of the building.
